Extraction process of carrageenan

All kind of organic food ingredients used in the food items is mostly extracted from the natural plant materials. During the process of extracting the organic materials, they involve certain chemicals in that to get the exact ingredient.

Due to the chemical usage that ingredients will generate side effects or sometimes reverse effects in health. Generally, the extraction of organic food products is not shown as transparent to the public if the common people know the process they may get a fear about using that product.

But carrageenan is different from all another organic food ingredient, which has a transparent and easy extraction process from its raw material. Even a rural village seaside fisherman can know the process of extracting the carrageenan from the red seaweed plant.

Even though the carrageenan is categorized under the sub level of organic food ingredient, it is pure non-organic food ingredient which has not involve any kind of chemicals in its extraction process to derive the pure carrageenan.

The extraction process of carrageenan involves three different methods such as,

  • Alcohol precipitation,
  • Gel precipitation or KCI precipitation,
  • Natural-grade method or semi-refined method.

Alcohol precipitation:

In the process of extracting the carrageenan by means of alcohol, precipitation involves the dipping of carrageenan raw material for 3 to 4 days in alcohol, then processing with the other stages of extraction without any chemical use.

Gel precipitation or KCI precipitation:

In the process of deriving the carrageenan by means of KCI precipitation involves the dipping of carrageenan raw material for 2 to 3 days in a KCI gel, then processing with the other stages of extraction without any chemical use.

Natural-grade method or semi-refined method:

This is semi- extraction of carrageenan without involving any chemicals and performed by means of the natural grade extraction process. Learn more here.
