Carrageenan vs Poligeenan
Both carrageenan and poligeenan are made from the same source: the red algae. However, they have different processing that will lead to different results and characteristics. The method to process the carrageenan is completely safe. It doesn’t involve any acidic bath that takes at least 6 hours to complete. You only need to boil the seaweed, strain it, and then mill it. When the carrageenan has been turned into a powdery form, it can be added to the foods as an emulsifier, thickener, or preservative.
On the other hand, the process to make poligeenan is quite dangerous and risky. It involves acidic bath which will change the natural compounds and substance. The food industry has no longer using the poligeenan because of the dangerous contents and traits.

However, most people don’t educate themselves on the matter. They tend to trust anyone without the hard proof – especially when it is related to their health. They tend to think that carrageenan is poligeenan and vice versa but they are actually two different entities. Based on many scientific studies, poligeenan is proven to be dangerous and even lethal but there is solid proof about the danger of carrageenan so far.
